Situated in the region of Ponidzie, in 990 Wiślica was taken over by King Mieszko I and became part of his estates. Some sources say that the prince of the State of Wiślanie received baptism in Wiślica in the year 880.
The town is dominated by a collegiate church erected by King Casimir the Great, which now plays the role of the Basilica Minor. Thanks to the Romanesque-Gothic figure of Our Lady from the year 1300, called the Łokietkowa Lady, the church is known as the Sanctuary of Łokietkowa Mother of God. Under the floor of the Gothic
church the remains of two Romanesque churches of the 12th and 13th centuries were discovered together with a Romanesque unique figurative floor dating back to 1170. In 1347 the so-called Wiślickie Statutes, the first Polish law codex, were announced. The House of Długosz from 1460 and a Gothic bell tower are also worth visiting in Wiślica.
